As said in the Plitvice post, to have Plitvice and Dubrovnik in the same itinerary for Croatia is cumbersome. One is located in the North and the other in the South. What we did was to gather in Zagreb, rent our cars there, drive to Plitvice Lakes National Park for the visit and then spend a night in Zadar. Zadar is a nice place to actually spend a day or two, but we were restricted by the number of days.
From Zadar, we drove off early morning to arrive in Split. Split and Dubrovnik are the oldest cities in Croatia and the largest city in the Dalmatia region. Even if you don't know where the Dalmatia region is, it is interesting to know that the black and white Dalmatian dogs actually got its name from here.
Split is pretty much a city that still retains most of the old architecture from centuries before. Definitely looks like a place to film the next 300 movie. From Split there are plenty of other islands nearby that you can visit like Hvar and Mostar. Nice islands to suntan and chill at the beaches. However, the beaches in Croatia don't have soft, nice sand like the Gold Coast. It is usually uneven gravel that is a pain to walk barefoot.
